ARNOLD SPORTS FESTIVAL ARCHERY CHALLENGE FEATURES TOP RECOGNITION FOR OVERALL TOP FEMALE AND OVERALL TOP MALE ARCHER
Overall Top Athletes Are Awarded Full Scholarships to Ohio’s Hocking College at the Ohio National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) state tournament
Jacob Riffle of Meigs High School and Kelsey Taylor of Morgan High School were the top overall male and female archers at the 2009 Arnold Archery Challenge featuring the Ohio National Archery in the School Program (NASP) state tournament. The two young competitors were each awarded full two-year scholarships to Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio – one of Ohio’s fastest growing state colleges. The top male and female archer were determined by a shoot-off between the top three boys and top three girls from each of three divisions - elementary, middle, and high school.
Kelsey Taylor, the Top Female Archer from Ohio’s Morgan High School plans to use her scholarship to study equine therapy at Hocking College. “I am extremely proud and excited to be the top overall female archer at this year’s Ohio State NASP Tournament.”
Taylor will pursue an Associates Degree in Applied Science in Equine Health & Complementary Therapies focusing on health care components within the horse industry. The program also features non-traditional therapies including equine acupressure, massage, and equine business management.
More than 800 students from 34 teams participated in the state tournament. Each competitor could score a maximum of 300 points by shooting arrows as close to the center of a target as possible.
Awards were given for both teams and individuals who competed well in the elementary, middle, and high school divisions.
Twenty-six Ohio teams received qualifying scores, making them eligible to attend the NASP National Invitational Tournament. The Maysville High School in Muskingum County earned first-place overall team honors for the 3rd consecutive year.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and UFC Champion Randy Couture recognized the tournament participants and congratulated them on their dedication to this Olympic sport.
The Meigs High School team won the Spirit Award in recognition of their enthusiasm and support of fellow archers and were posed for a team photo with avid bow hunter and action star Randy Couture.
