More than 300 table tennis players of all ages and abilities will take their best shots at the Arnold Table Tennis Challenge, March 5-7, 2010 in the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
“We’ll have a competitive category for everyone, from beginners to world class players,” said Ed Hogshead, event chairman. “Spectators will enjoy such a wide range of styles and skills that their heads may be spinning as fast as the ball.”
On Friday, March 5, player’s age 50 and better will compete in a Central Ohio Senior Olympics, a new feature this year of the Arnold Active Living Festival. Also on Friday, recreational players compete for medals and gift certificates in singles, family doubles, and a 41-point handicap event.
Saturday, March 6, features singles competitions, from novices at 9 a.m. to “hardbats” at 6 p.m. A hardbat is covered with ordinary pimpled rubber on both sides, rather than the layered rubber used on today’s sponge bats. Hardbats are rare at the top levels of table tennis, but some players and spectators enjoy them more because their reduced spin and speed allow for longer rallies.
Sunday, March 7 will feature the Collegiate Team Championships. Finals of the OpeDrn division will be held on the Arnold Fitness EXPO stage in Hall D at noon. The winner will take challengers from the crowd after the match.
Killerspin and Landmark Billing Systems, Inc. are sponsors of the Arnold Table Tennis Challenge. Killerspin, the biggest name in table tennis, provides tables and equipment for the competition. Landmark Billing Systems, Inc. provides event management, judges and prizes for winners.
