The Arnold Strongman Classic annually features the world’s top strongman professionals in a two-day competition to determine the world’s strongest man.
The ninth-annual event features six events – such as Timber Carry, Manhood Stones, Apollon’s Wheel, Tire Deadlift, Heavy Yoke and Circus Dumbell – that are designed to test sheer brute strength.
The field for the invitation-only event will be named in the coming months. 2009 champion Derek Poundstone of Waterbury, Conn., is expected to return to defend the first major championship of his career. Poundstone captured the 2009 Arnold Strongman Classic after finishing second in both the 2008 Arnold Strongman Classic and 2008 World’s Strongest Man. Six-time champion Zydrunas Savickas of Lithuania, who did not compete in 2009, is expected to return in 2010.
The events for the 2010 Arnold Strongman Classic may include:
- Timber Carry – Also known as the Farmer’s Walk, contestants have 30 seconds to carry 865 pounds of barn timber up a 32-foot inclined ramp.
- Manhood Stones – Contestants lift round stones weighing up to 530 pounds over a bar approximately four feet, two inches high.
- Apollon’s Wheel – Contestants lift a 366-pound barbell over their heads as many times as possible. The barbell features two large weights welded to a thick bar and was made famous by turn-of-the-century strongman Louis “Apollon” Uni.
- Tire Deadlift – Contestants lift a specially-designed 14-foot long bar weighted with tires and metal plates. The beginning weight for the event is at least 700 pounds.
- Heavy Yoke – Contestants carry a yoke weighing 1,116 pounds across their shoulders for 36 feet.
- Circus Dumbell – Contestants lift a 202-pound dumbbell over their head as many times as possible. Contestants are allowed to use two hands to bring the dumbbell to their shoulders, but must lift it overhead with one hand.
The Arnold Strongman Classic, produced by Drs. Terry and Jan Todd of the University of Texas, will be held March 5-6 at the Arnold Sports Festival. All events are held on the main stage are the Arnold Fitness Expo, except for the final event which is held at Veteran’s Memorial.
