The Arnold Strongman Classic annually features the world’s top strongman professionals in a two-day competition to determine the world’s strongest man.
Two-time Arnold Strongman Classic champion Derek Poundstone of Waterbury, Conn., will return to defend his title again in 2011, and again is expected to face six-time ASC champ Zydrunas Savickas of Lithuania. Poundstone defeated Savickas in 2010 after Savickas returned from a one-year hiatus, The mighty Lithuanian won the Arrnold Strongman six straight times between 2003 and 2008. He also won the 2009 World’s Strongest Man and is considered by many to be the greatest strongman of all time.
The 2011 Arnold Strongman Classic is expected to feature five events – Timber Carry, Manhood Stones, Apollon’s Wheel, Tire Deadlift and Circus Bell – that are designed to test sheer brute strength.
Tentative Schedule for 2011 Arnold Strongman Classic
Friday, March 4, 2-5 p.m. at Arnold Fitness EXPO Stage
Event #1: Apollon’s Wheel – The Apollon's Wheel will have a major format change in 2010. In previous years, contestants would lift a 366-pound barbell over their heads as many times as possible. This year, rising bar format will be instituted in which each competitor will attempt to lift the bar three times, beginning at 366 pounds (166 kg), then moving to 388 pounds (176 kg), 410 pounds (186 kg), 432 pounds (196 kg) and finally 454 pounds (206 kg). Those who advance to the 454-pound stage will do as many floor-to-overhead reps as possible in 90 seconds.
Event #2: Tire Deadlift – Contestants lift a specially-designed 14-foot long bar weighted with tires and metal plates. The beginning weight for the event will be approximately 600 pounds (270 kg).
Saturday, March 5, 1-4 p.m. at Arnold Fitness EXPO Stage
Event #3: Circus Dumbbell -- Contestants lift a 228-pound dumbbell, up from 202 pounds, over their head as many times as possible. Contestants are allowed to use two hands to bring the dumbbell to their shoulders, but must lift it overhead with one hand.
Event #4: Manhood Stones -- Contestants lift round stones weighing approximately 533 pounds (242 kg) and 452 pounds (205 kg) over a bar approximately 49 inches high as many times as possible in 60 seconds. Contestants who can lift the heaviest stone will not have to attempt the lighter stone because one rep of the heavier stone will beat any number of reps of the lighter stone.
Saturday, March 6, 7 p.m. at Veteran’s Memorial
Event #5: Timber Carry -- Also known as the Farmer’s Walk, contestants will carry a wooden frame weighting approximately 1,003 pounds (450 kg) up a 32-foot inclined ramp as fast a they can. The weight of the apparatus is up from 875 pounds in previous years. Competitors will be allowed to use straps for the first time.
