2012 Outside The Ring Award
The Arnold USA Amateur Boxing Invitational Championships also presents the Outside the Ring Award to an individual recognized for their ongoing contributions to the sport of boxing both in and outside the ring. Past recipients include: Frank Shamrock, Joe Frazier, James “Buster” Douglas, Jerry Page, Vonzell Johnson, Johnny Davis, Jr. and Mike Johnson and karate and boxing legend Troy Dorsey.
Roy Jones, Jr. a six-time world champion who held world titles in the middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions, will receive the Outside The Ring Award in 2012. He is the only boxer in history to begin his career as a light middleweight and go on to win a heavyweight title.
Early on Jones’ father, Roy Jones Sr., ran his own boxing gym where he trained many youth fighters including his son. He was very tough on his son, often driving him to exhaustion. Jr. said in a Sports Illustrated article “I spent all my life in my dad's cage. I could never be 100 percent of who I am until I left it. But because of him, nothing bothers me. I'll never face anything stronger and harder than what I already have.”
Jones is known for his incredible speed and punching power. Former heavyweight champion George Foreman said Jones Jr. “hits like a heavyweight and moves like a lightweight.”
From 1993-1997 Roy Jones Jr. has won numerous awards including Fighter of the Year; Man of the Year; Sportsman of the Year, Fighter of Unlimited Potential, an ESPY, Boxer of the Decade, Best Pound-for-Pound Fighter in the World and Best Fighter in the World.
Arnold Pro Boxing To Return in 2012
Professional boxing will return to the Arnold Sports Festival on Thursday, March 1, when Roy Jones Jr. Presents Championship Boxing at the Battelle Grand at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
The six-fight card will feature the main event of Michael "Cold Blood" Clark (40-4) against Don Futrell (24-3) of Las Vegas in a WBC TITLE ELIMINATOR bout, which means the winner of the fight will be ranked No. 10 in the world by the WBC.
The co-main event will feature heavyweights Jason Massey (7-1) of Cleveland against John Smith Jr. (9-0) of Columbus, who is trained by former world heavyweight champion James "Buster" Douglas.
Jones Jr., a six-time world champion who held world titles in the middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions, and Douglast, who knocked out Mike Tyson in February 1990 in the greatest upset in the history of sports, will be among the celebrities on hand for the second-annual Arnold Pro Boxing event.
The remainder of the fight card will be announced soon.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m., first bout at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15-60 and are available at ticketmaster.com/arnold.
