Julia Richey, Royal Arts Academy - Photo by Gary Gardiner/SmallTown Stock
It’s a great week for Julia Richey to celebrate. She’s opening a new fencing academy this weekend in Columbus and she celebrates her arrival in America from Russia ten years ago.
The last year was also a highlight for the 13-year member of the Russian National Fencing Team and chairwoman of the Arnold Fencing Classic at the Arnold Sports Festival. The Arnold Fencing Classic hosted the first FIE Fencing Championship to take place in the USA. The FIE, the world governing body for fencing, usually holds its qualifying championships in Europe. On the strength of the Arnold Fencing Classic, the group’s USA event was very successful and worthy of a repeat in coming years, especially as the Summer Olympics gets closer.
Julia’s fencing academy, located just off Broad Street at Taylor Station Road, creates a new educational space for fencers. With her new partners and coaches, Tim Mills and Anatolii Verlusky, the school expands on the success of her coaching style for children and young adults.
Her arrival in New York ten years ago, a fresh immigrant from Russia, began a new stage of her life that has brought great changes and an appreciation for the success of the business opportunities she’s enjoyed since that day in 1999.

We’ll bring the athletes Sunday to the Columbus Clippers final weekend game at Huntington Park so you can meet them, see some of their athletic talents, get a few autographs, and receive free Arnold Sports Festival tickets just for being one of the first 100 fitness fans to show up.
Of course, this is a Tweetup so make sure to complete the requisite 140 characters as you enjoy meeting the athletes and the game. You can also let your friends know you got free tickets.
Our last appearance at the Columbus Crew surprised the crowd with youth dancers, archers, fencers, and a bodybuilder or two. We’re not sure who’ll you get to meet this time around but it’s always fun to be surprised.
Information for other special ticket offers will be available during the Tweetup.
The Arnold Sports Festival is proud to partner with the Columbus Clippers, American Dairy Association and Ticketmaster to help you have a healthy and active lifestyle.
Visit ClippersBaseball.com for information on the Clippers and Huntington Park and Ticketmaster to buy tickets to Sunday’s game.

Smiling, she tells the interviewer at GrowingBolder.com, “She’s never lied to me, cheated on me and I can depend on her.”
Her maintenance program for the car is so involved that she insists watching all the repairs, installed lifetime guarantee replacement parts, and even has diagrams to help mechanics know how to make repairs.

Congratulations to the following fitness athletes who all earned their Pro cards at the 2009 IFBB North American Championships in Cleveland this weekend.
Tammy Patnode, Zoa Linsey, David Goodin, Mark Antonek, Shawn Rhoden, Silvana Salvati, Cheryl Brown, Lavonda Ezell, Kira Rivera, Jessica Lawrence, and Kat Holmes.
Maybe we’ll soon get to see you on the stage at the Arnold Sports Festival real soon.
Jen Hendershott, the 2009 Fitness International champion, is on the cover of the September issue of Iron Man Magazine. There’s a guy on the cover, Tony Breznik. We wish him luck but Jen is a Columbus girl and long-time friend of the Arnold Sports Festival and we couldn’t let the moment go by without pointing out her success as a fitness competitor and businesswoman and her great looks.
Jen told her Web fans earlier this month that she would not be competing in the Fitness Olympia this year although she will attend. There’s no mention of the 2010 Fitness International in her note so she may be saving herself for another run at the title. Either way, we wish her the best.
Iron Man also has a video of Jen’s photo shoot on the beach. Take a look and remember the next time how much fun it might be to be the subject of a magazine shoot, it’s more than just looking great. you’ve got to perform. And a great performance it is. Enjoy 92 seconds of high-flying Jen.
This week we want you to modify the salsa recipe by adding a few green or red peppers and a small amount of parsley to the mix. Change the black beans to kidney beans, if you don’t mind the alteration, and serve as a side dish to the Asian Salmon Steaks recipe for this week.
The original recipe for the salmon steaks came from the George Foreman Lean Mean Grilling Machine cookbook. It’s modified just a little here for a slight taste change.
Asian Salmon Steaks
1 tsp Rice vinegar
2 Tbs Soy Sauce (use low sodium if preferred)
1/4 cup Honey or molasses for an earthier flavor
2 Tbs Chinese mustard
2 Tbs fresh parsley, minced fine
4 Six-ounce Salmon filets
In a small saucepan combine the vinegar, soy sauce, honey, mustard, and parsley. Slow simmer for 5 minutes.
Dip Salmon steaks in sauce and place in heated grill. Pour spoonful of sauce over each steak.

I’m guessing the next James Bond film will have Danny MacAskill as Daniel Craig’s stuntman performing these tricks through the streets of Bucharest, Mogadishu, or Beijing, in pursuit of the latest enemy of the Crown.

Valerie Waugaman poses during one of the rounds in the 2006 Fitness International on the stage of Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Valerie didn’t place well in her first exposure to the Arnold Sports Festival competitive stage finishing out of the top six.
However, she did go on to a few other stage performances as “Siren,” one of the athlete defenders on “American Gladiator” where she met her opponents on a slightly different stage and with a different set of tools.
We thought you’d like to see her how we first met her, on the stage at the 2006 Fitness International competition.

The Columbus Dispatch recently wrote about college wrestlers abandoning international competition to go into mixed martial arts which has a higher profile and offers better financial rewards. Columbus MMA fighter Mark Coleman, a champion wrestler at Ohio State University and a champion in the UFC, says the transition is easy for college wrestlers. Their skill set matches what’s necessary for an MMA career.
International Olympic Committee Fencing Animated Graphic
The International Olympic committee has an animated graphic that explains the weapons, techniques, and scoring for international fencing competitions. The rules are the same used at the Arnold Fencing Classic. If you’re not familiar with the sport or need a refresher course in what’s important about the scoring methods, take a look.
If you don’t fence, this is a good pre-Olympic introduction to the sport.

Have you ever wondered what a professional trainer does on his day off? Mike Davies spends his day, and some evenings, training professional and amateur athletes for fitness and bodybuilding competitions throughout the world. His success is shown in the number of his clients who have won and placed in the top ten in IFBB-sponsored competitions. His wife, Julie Palmer, placed second last year in the Fitness International event at at the Arnold Sports Festival.
Davies spends part of his off time coaching the Rams of the Junior Football League of Westerville, where his son plays. The next time your trainer gives you orders for one more set of walking lunges with 20 pound weights in each hand, it could be worse. You could have on shoulder pads and a helmet, be running wind sprints at the end of practice, and learning how to explode from a three-point stance.

We’ll be back next week with reports on how the team is doing, what it’s like to coach professional athletes in the morning and youth athletes that afternoon, and how he trains kids to be better athletes.
